That said, I have over twenty years experience (wow, time flies) playing in the dirt.

We have had so many inquiries into Greenhouses and I am going to address some basic questions here.
However, if you have more questions, call Ty. And if you want to talk to me, just let him know you would like to talk to Kay about gardening.

How big of a greenhouse do I need?
That totally depends on what you depend on doing with it. If you are just trying your hand at gardening then maybe a small 4x4, just enough to start seedlings will be sufficient. However, if you are planting 25 flats of tomatoes *grins*, I would suggest something larger. If you are a hardcore gardener, wanting to become self-sufficient, to buy bigger than you think you would need just because you will be amazed at how much you really can grow in a greenhouse. But again, no one but you knows how much you will use it or what you intend to do with it, so consider this. Really think about it.

Will I be able to use the greenhouse year round?
I really want to say yes. But the simple fact is, we live in Texas. If you let it get too hot in your greenhouse, your plants are going to cook. BUT! ...there had to be a BUT

Remember last year, 2013?
We had a freeze in MAY. MAY! And it is times like this, after the temperatures have risen nicely for spring and then suddenly plummet that you will be glad you had someplace to move all those tomato flats to. Typically, in mine, now every climate even ten miles west of me, is different - so you are going to have to play with this depending upon where your greenhouse sits and how much sun it gets - does it get western evening sun? does it only get morning sun? is it under an oak tree? But in mine, if the temperature goes above 80, I need to open my windows and turn my sprinkler heads on.

I have had my greenhouse FULL, literally all my shelves and my floor so you cannot even open the door - many, many, times. If a spring storm is coming up - you know the hail, potential tornado kind of storm - I immediately rush outside like a madwoman and move everything from my outdoor nursery to my greenhouse. I have been known to do this even into June.

So how many months do I use it?
I use it all the time. But it doesn't always have seedlings in it. In the heat of the summer (July-August) its storing my gardening supplies - flats, dirt, tools, etc. It has plants in it from October to April/May - depending upon how hot it gets.

Right now, I have tomatoes started - but because its just too cold (supposed to be single digit wind chills) they are inside under grow lights in my dining room. But as soon as it warms up enough to not be deadly cold to the plants, they will all move to the greenhouse and stay there for several months until they move to the outdoor nursery. Unless it shoots up to 85 in February. You have to be ready to move your plants around if you are greenhouse gardening in Texas. Yes, they provide great shelter for seedlings, but there is a point in which its too hot or too cold unless you modify it.

Do I need electricity? Heat? Grow Lights? Fans? Water?
Electricity? Maybe. We do not run electric. But you can have it added if you want. Or run extension cords (waterproof outdoor extension cords).
Heat? I have used little space heaters before and its nice to keep the chill out of the space.
Grow lights? Should not need them unless you put it under that oak tree.
Fans? Proper ventilation is a *must*. Air movement makes stronger, healthier plants. Windows are great! You can run fans if you like, but I have never found a need with my windows but we have a lot of wind here.

What kind of base should I put the greenhouse on?
Mine is on a treated/cedar base. However, some people do gravel, some people do nothing but dirt.
The choice again, is yours.

As much as I love my Greenhouse, I also love my outdoor Nursery benches. They are a great "interim" place for plants between the greenhouse stage and the ground. And they are awesome because they keep the plants off the ground and away from ants, critters, etc.

If you are interested in any of our Greenhouses, Nursery Benches, or Raised Beds - please call Ty.
And I am happy to talk gardening if you have any questions.

Oh! And as for tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants - I always start mine now in January. I have found February to be too late for my liking. I prefer a bigger plant to put in the ground and that is why I have started as early as January 4 in years past.

We would like to take a moment to address and respond to a recent inquiry and accusation that our chickens are unhealthy. Where this came from we have no clue. However, we have deduced that it possibly could have occurred because of my recent battle with camphylobacter.

Camphylobacter is a bacteria-borne illness which the CDC did not even recognize until 1972. It was merely seen as "Traveler's Diarrhea". And typically you get camphylobacter from eating undercooked chicken. At the time of my infection, I was vegetarian so chicken was out. I had been sublicensed to do wild animal rescue. I had recently rehabilitated 2 baby raccoons, and we believe this is where I got it from.

At no point, back in June nor anytime during the summer or now have our chickens or baby chicks ever had any serious health related issues. We worm twice a year. We dust for lice. And during the early spring, most of Ellis county did have coccidiosis running about and we treated for it and had no losses.

We have given away - FREE - hundreds of baby chicks to our customers and never have had any complaints. Never. The only complaint we ever got was, "Hey Ty, this is a rooster, can you please take it back?" And we always have. As many of you know our clients are not just customers, they are family to us. When one of them has a question about chickens or rabbits, Ty is quick with a response.

I am insulted by the accusation for not only my immediate family here at the farm but for our clients as well. We do our absolute best to insure quality chicks to match our gorgeous coops. Ty had had many inquiries from people not needing coops but wanting some of our chicks so he recently posted an ad offering to hatch chicks for people. He enjoys the process of gathering eggs, candling them, insuring a good hatch, and monitoring baby chicks their first few weeks; it's like a hobby for him. Anyone who would like to come and get chickens or coops from us is more than welcome here at the farm. Our chickens and rabbits are spoiled rotten daily with a variety of scraps, quality feed, and fresh water.

For more info on camphylobacter. I am better now. In part due to the outpouring of support from our client "family" who prayed for me, brought me plants, brought me soup, and were continually asking Ty how I was doing. The love I have received over the last few months has been abundant and I am deeply grateful - thank you!

In over a year, we have never had anyone disappointed that we know of - with chicks, coops, or dealing with Ty (or Bry, or me!). If anyone has questions, comments, or concerns, please call Ty directly at 214-399-8401.
He would be more than happy to talk to ya!
with much love and respect,

Basically, we had this idea of Chicago Brownstones, how they all sit next to each other with different roof pitches and door colors and it just blossomed into this. I am so very proud of this coop and I want to thank Ty for making it for me, for always humoring my whims and just getting creative with it. Thanks babe. ;)

Ok, here is specs:
4x12 divided into 4 (4x3's give or take, we fudged a little on some of our bigger birds and gave them more room but they don't know that) separate coops each with its own roosting area, and grazing area. Each of the four roosts have individual drop-down back doors for easy egg retrieval.

And if anyone knows of ANYONE who may have Sicilian Buttercups (purebreds), please send us a holler - we are in desperate need of a rooster as we have five very lonely Italian girls. ;)

First of all, we want to thank you for all your continued appreciation of our work! This business is built on you!

Unfortunately, quarterly price checks on wood did not fair well for us and you may have noticed an increase in pricing. For this, we sincerely apologize though we understand we cannot do anything about it.

If you have spoken with Ty prior to today, your price will be the former. However, any new bids will be based on the current pricing.

It is fair to say, if the price of lumber comes back down, so will ours. And if it goes up again, so will we. Our hands are tied on this. We believe in quality and craftsmanship - our chicken coops are "yard art." And we will not start skimping on quality of wood just to get a lower price.

We hope that you will continue to enjoy your coops, hutches and greenhouses. And maybe one day someone will order one of my darling arbors! ;)

Everyone have a GREAT week!
Love,
Kay
It's sleek, simple style combines both elements of the open-roofed "Showgirl" and the charm of the "Chateau". This is a great example of one!

This coop also had bottom wire for extra protection from digging critters.
